Benefit Eligibility: Academic Staff

Academic Staff - Continuing Appointments

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) under the Faculty, Administrative Professional Officer, Faculty Service Officer or Librarian agreements is eligible to participate in the benefits.

A staff member who has reached the age of 65 is not eligible for benefits under 20.06 (Alberta Health Care).  Coverage will commence with the provincial Alberta Blue Cross Seniors’ Program and the member must coordinate other benefits with the benefits provided by the governments.  Disability under 20.13 (a) will terminate June 30 following the member’s 65 birthday.

Administrative Professional Officer

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) is eligible to participate in the benefits.

Faculty Service Officer

Librarian

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) is eligible to participate in the benefits.

A staff member who has reached the age of 65 is not eligible for benefits under 20.06 (Alberta Health Care).  Coverage will commence with the provincial Alberta Blue Cross Seniors’ Program and the member must coordinate other benefits with the benefits provided by the governments.  Disability under 20.13 (a) will terminate June 30 following the member’s 65 birthday.

Academic Staff - Temporary Appointments   

Contract Academic Staff: Teaching

A staff member whose full-time appointment is for 8 months or longer will participate in the benefits program.

A staff member whose appointment is either 1) part-time or 2) full-time and less than 8 months in duration is not eligible for the benefit programs.   However in lieu of the benefit programs, the University will pay an amount equal to 3% of salary.

If a staff member’s part-time teaching load during the Fall and Winter terms when combined with courses taught in other departments or through Special Registrations during the Fall and Winter terms is considered to be full-time by the staff member’s home department, the staff member may be eligible for benefits. It is incumbent upon the staff member to inform his/her home department of any other courses being taught that would affect the staff member’s eligibility for benefits, the cost for which would be pro-rated across departments and Special Registrations.

Sessional and Other Temporary Staff

A staff member whose full-time appointment is for 8 months or longer will participate in the benefits program.

A staff member whose appointment is either 1) part-time or 2) full-time and less than 8 months in duration is not eligible for the benefit programs.   However in lieu of the benefit programs, the University will pay an amount equal to 3% of salary.

If a staff member has concurrent, multiple part-time academic sessional appointments which together constitute a full-time equivalent, the staff member may be eligible for benefits. It is incumbent upon the staff member to inform his/her home department of any academic employment that would affect his/her eligibility for benefits, the cost for which would be pro-rated across departments.

Trust/Research Academic Staff

A staff member whose full-time appointment is for 8 months or longer will participate in the benefits program.

A staff member whose appointment is either 1) part-time or 2) full-time and less than 8 months in duration is not eligible for the benefit programs.   However in lieu of the benefit programs, the Trustholder will pay an amount equal to 3% of salary.

If a staff member has concurrent, multiple part-time academic research/trust appointments which together constitute a full-time equivalent, the staff member may be eligible for benefits. It is incumbent upon the staff member to inform his/her home department of any academic employment that would affect his/her eligibility for benefits, the cost for which would be pro-rated across departments.

In lieu of the benefit programs, the Trustholder will pay 3% of salary to a staff member whose appointment is part-time or is for less than 8 months in duration.
