Employee Relations and Human Resource Consulting

Employee Relations and HR Consulting Services (ER/HRC) promotes and facilitates effective employee relations at all levels within the University environment and provides proactive services that support a productive workplace and effective issue resolution/dispute prevention.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conducting collective agreement negotiations with NASA on behalf of the University in collaboration with Faculty and Department clients, senior administration, and HRS colleagues.

  • Providing support for collective agreement negotiations with AASUA as requested by the Office of the AVP.

  • Providing advice and interpretations to the University community on the NASA/U of A Collective Agreement and managing grievances and arbitrations, position disruption, discrimination and harassment complaints, exclusions and jurisdictional disputes.

  • Providing initial advice and interpretation to the University community on the AASUA collective agreements in collaboration with the AVP HR and Faculty Relations: providing support to Faculty Relations for Article 16s that may arise from issues we have been dealing with.

  • Negotiating settlements, collective agreement waivers, Letters of Understanding and other formal agreements on behalf of the University in consultation with affected constituents.

  • Advising and supporting Faculty and Department clients in managing a variety of multifaceted human resource and workplace issues, including workplace conflict prevention and resolution, performance management (including progressive discipline), attendance management and change strategies.

  • Supporting development of human resource policies, programs and systems in areas such as performance and attendance management.

  • Providing advice to Faculty/Department clients on recruitment and selection, including screening, short-listing, interviewing and selection.

  • Supporting Payroll OperationsAcademic Services in determining employee status, salary and other terms and conditions. 

  • Providing initial advice to clients on staff development and job design/compensation issues to identify needs and facilitate collaborations/referrals.
