Pension and Benefit Advisory Services

Pension & Benefit Advisory Services develops and manages the pension and benefit plans for Academic, Support, Post Doctoral Fellows and Executive Staff on campus. The unit mandate is to maximize the supportive role of these plans in the achievement of the University goal of attraction and retention of high performing staff. Our service objective is to foster improved relations between the University and its employees thereby supporting the University's desire to be recognized as a great place to work.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Orient all staff members on their pension and benefit plans.

  • Consultative services concerning pension and benefit coverage during; life event changes; marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, leaves of absence, termination, and retirement.

  • First point of contact in the event of death of member or spouse and liaison with third party administrators for payment of death benefits.

  • Pension administration, which includes determination of pension eligibility, pensionable service, optional service, pension transfers and annual reporting.

  • Internal System administration for pension and benefits including Employee Benefit Orientation calendar, smart forms etc.

  • Manages regular interface between internal system and external third party providers.

  • Determines impacts to benefits in the event of a position change.

  • Co-ordinates continuing coverage for over-age student dependents.

  • Development of all employee benefit communications material in all media (hard and soft copy formats).

  • Responsible for the ongoing updating and accuracy of the HR Benefits website.

  • Active in University orientation programs, retirement programs, educational sessions with faculties and departments.
